    Tips for the Region

England's sunniest county is also one of the largest in the UK. Home to the Sunshine Coast with delights such as Clacton-on-Sea as well as historic market towns such as Colchester and hidden gems that include Saffron Walden and Mersea Island.

From Urban Essex to the Sunshine Coast

Essex is a diverse county that stretches from London in the west to a long sandy coastline in the east. In between is a great amount of flat grasslands, woodland and farmland, dotted with small charming hamlets and villages between each larger town. To the east lies a coast which includes a mix of sandy beaches and fishing towns, characterised by black weatherboarded shacks at locations such as the Blackwater Estuary and Mersea Island. Whether your journey starts at one of the many pick-up points on the Essex/London Border or at Stansted Airport a great route is to drive east passing through rural beauty to the sunny coast. Tip: Check travel news first to choose between the A12 and A120 heading east for your road trip.

    Important Cities

Colchester and Chelmsford are two must-see destinations during a stay in Essex. If you have time, complete your visit with a drive to Mersea Island.

The county town of Chelmsford was awarded city status in 2012. Highlights in this centrally located city include Chelmsford Cathedral, the only one in the county. Hylands House is another attraction especially with its setting within the vast beautiful grounds of Hylands Park which also hosts V Festival. The town centre has excellent shopping, restaurants and bars catering for a growing commuter population with London tastes.

The oldest recorded town in Britain has a rich and fascinating history. From Colchester Castle, built on the foundations of a Roman Temple when the town, then named Camoludonum was ruled from Rome by Emporer Claudius and burned to the ground by the Iron Age warrior Queen Boudicca. Other highlights include the Cultural Quarter, home to the Firstsite Contemporary Arts Centre.

    Mersea Island

Mersea Island is the biggest island off the east coast of England. This once Roman party island is still accessed over a bridge built on Roman foundations. Head to the populated half of West Mersea to enjoy oysters at the famed Company Shed or drive to sparse East Mersea to discover WWII pill boxes, quiet beaches and a vineyard.

    Climate, Cuisine, and Children

    Climate and temperatures

Essex enjoys the some of the highest number of daily hours of sunlight in the UK as well as the lowest rainfall. Daily temperatures in summer average at 22 degrees Celcius. Summer is the best time to visit but even in autumn and spring rainy days are fewer than anywhere else in Britain.

    The Essex Cuisine

Seafood along the coast is popular, especially Colchester and Mersea Oysters and of course, traditional fish and chips. The county is also home to the jam-makers Tiptree Jam and almost all cream teas in the county are served with this delicious spread. The Essex Huffer (a large roll) is one of the few regional foods that aren't seen outside of the county and is best served with plenty of meaty fillings.

    Essex with Children

Essex is a seriously family-friendly destination. From the outdoor adventures at Great Notley Park to the endless seaside fun at Clacton, Walton and Southend-on-Sea. The county is home to many country parks including the Gruffalo Trail at Thorndon And the Stickman Trail at Weald Country Park.
