About the Region

History, heritage, folklore and mystery are all waiting to be discovered in Scotland along with the region's spectacular scenery and, if you are lucky, a glimpse of the Loch Ness Monster and the Northern Lights. With so much to see and do, Scotland is definitely the place for a scenic road trip.

The Scottish West Coast

Pick up your car hire in Scotland from one of our Glasgow branches and you are perfectly placed to start a tour of the West coast. Make Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park your first destination and be sure to enjoy the view from An Ceann Mor at Inveruglas. Continue west to Oban stopping for lunch in the small town of Inverary which lies on the banks of Loch Fyne. Venturing further North will take you through Glencoe to Fort William. This is the gateway to Ben Nevis, the UK's highest peak.

The highest point on your route between Glasgow and Oban is known as the Rest and Be Thankful. Inquisitive Highland Cattle will watch as you take your photographs.

Tip:With beautiful scenery to observe and winding stretches of country roads we recommend you leave plenty of time for your drive and remember that Scotland's weather is unpredictable at any time of the year.

Whisky Country

Pick up your car at Inverness Airport and drive from the city to Moray Speyside, a scenic route that's just the right length for a daytrip. It takes in castles, rivers and whisky distilleries. Travel from Inverness to:

  • The pristine white beaches of Nairn.
  • Visit Brodie Castle in Forres before reaching Moray Speyside.
  • Take time here to explore Spynie Palace and Elgin Cathedral.
  • If you want to extend your trip, drive South into the Cairngorms National Park.

Important Cities

Edinburgh and Glasgow are must see cities in Scotland and lie conveniently close together. If time allows, head further North and spend some time in Inverness and the surrounding countryside.

Edinburgh

Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh is both romantic and historic with its backdrop of craggy Arthur's Seat and Edinburgh Castle. It offers a feast of museums, galleries and shopping but if you plan on visiting during the Edinburgh Festival or when the Military Tattoo is taking place, both in the Summer months, we recommend booking your accommodation and car rental well in advance.

Glasgow

Glasgow is Scotland's largest city and has gone from industrial to stylish over the last century with plenty of attractions to entertain whatever your age. Enjoy the collections at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, just one of many in the city or take a tour of the iconic Ibrox Stadium home to Glasgow Rangers. And, Glasgow's shopping is said to be second only to London in the UK.

Inverness

Inverness is the capital of the Highlands and the place to learn a few words of Gaelic or buy some tartan. It is also the perfect place for hunting out Nessie on Loch Ness or visiting the historic battlefield of Culloden.

Climate, Cuisine, and Children

Climate and temperature

Scotland's climate is predictable only in being unpredictable so always be prepared for four seasons in one day. Spring and Autumn are delightful for nature's varied colours while the country's Northern latitude gives long days of sunshine in the Summer but temperatures that rarely rise above 17°C. The Highland mountains can have over 100 days of annual snowfall, making Scotland's ski resorts popular Winter destinations.

The Scottish kitchen

Scotland does hearty meat-filled dishes to perfection with warming Winter stews and local delicacies like Haggis, a real comfort dish of spicy minced meat. For sweet treats take some Scottish shortbread home as a souvenir and no visit is complete without touring a whisky distillery.

Scotland with children

Children always love exploring castles and there are no shortage of either in Scotland including the ramparts, tunnels and dungeons of Edinburgh Castle. The Heads of Ayr Farm Park is an adventure playground with surprising animals like lemurs, llamas, meerkats and Ralph the resident camel. If the kids want real roller coaster thrills then the Strathclyde Country Park at Motherwell is home to M&D's Theme Park.
