The driver has to be in possession of a valid driving license for at least 1 year. Furthermore, the following conditions apply depending on the issuing country of the driving licence.
If the renter or driver has been in Costa Rica for longer than 3 months, he needs to present a driving license issued in Costa Rica.
Driving licenses printed with non Roman alphabet (Arabic, Japanese, Cyrillic etc) must be complemented by an International driving license.
Please show your valid ID card or passport and driver license at time of pick up.
Photocopies, digital licenses, Learner's Permits, and driver's licenses with driving restrictions will not be accepted.
Minimum age in Costa Rica is 18.
Driver has to be in possession of a valid driving license for at least 1 year.

A Young Driver Surcharge applies for drivers under 21 years.
A surcharge of 5.65 USD per day applies for drivers above 75 years (for car all groups).
The following credit cards are accepted: all credit cards from internationally recognised credit card companies - such as American Express, Diners Club, Discover, Mastercard and Visa. We do not accept any prepaid cards or debit cards (Visa Electron). The renter must be the owner of the indicated credit card.
Sixt CarExpress Servicecard (Advantage Circle) is only accepted in combination with a valid Credit Card.
Cash Payment (in local currency or US Dollars) and traveller's checks are accepted. However, please note that a credit card for guarantee purposes must be presented on collection of the vehicle.
Please be aware that security deposits are only accepted with valid credit cards, if needed, with the PIN.
An advance charge approval is obtained for the chosen means of payment as a security deposit. The exact deposit is determined on collection since the amount is dependent on the vehicle and the rental length. Cash deposits are not accepted.

When booking at a prepaid rate, the payment will be charged along with the total rental price (incl. booked extras and charges) prior to the rental. The driver and mode of payment shall be finalised at the time of reservation and cannot be changed. The confirmed credit card should be valid and available for presentation on collection of the vehicle. All extra costs that occur during the car rental will be charged to this credit card.
A refund shall not be issued for non-collection, vehicle being collected late or returned early.
Changing Booking
A prepaid booking can be changed up to 48 hours before the start of the rental (depending on availability) in return for a booking modification fee of 27,00 USD. Any payment already made towards the rental will not be refunded; nor shall any differential amount be refunded if this modification leads to a lesser rental cost. Any changes made to a prepaid reservation may impact the rental rate. A change from a prepaid rate to a non-prepaid rate is not possible.
Cancellation
A booking can be cancelled before the rental begins. In the event of cancellation, the payment in advance already made towards the rental shall be paid back subject to a cancellation charge, which will be withheld and shall be in the amount of the rental charge (including any extras and charges) for a maximum of 3 rental days. No-show
In the event that the booked vehicle is not collected or not collected at the agreed time the rental charge already paid shall be withheld in full.
None of the below mentioned protections includes a road assistance service.All transfer costs of any damaged rented vehicle as a result of an accident or driver behaviour have to be assumed by the renter.
Sixt Rent a Car Costa Rica does not accept Car Rental Insurance, third party liability insurance or other protections offered by third party companies that are not fully registered and authorized by the Government of Costa Rica to provide this type of service within our borders.
Rates do include Third Party Liability.
Protection coverage for the vehicle rented includes Third Party Liability with a maximum cover of 1,000,000.00 USD per event for Third party injuries and liabilities.
The customer is only responsible for the following amounts:
20% deductible for the first 50,000 USD for material damages, with a minimum of 600.00 USD.
Excluded from the protection is the use of the vehicle for the transport of dangerous goods.Coverage does not apply if driving through rivers, on beach or in contact with salt water. All protection cover as part of the rental contract will become void, in particular, if an unauthorized driver has used the vehicle or if the driver of the vehicle does not possess the required driver's license at thetime of the event giving rise to claim.
Liability Insurance (TI) does not cover all situations that may arise while operating a -rental vehicle-. TI does not cover all risks. There may be exclusions for unauthorized or intoxicated drivers,no first party uninsured motorist coverage, no coverage for certain passengers in the vehicle and other exclusions as stated in the protection policy.
If purchased, the Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) eliminates the excess of 600.00 USD of third party property damages.
If SLI is accepted, the customer is only responsible for the following amounts: USD 0.00.
Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) does not cover all situations that may arise while operating a rental vehicle. SLI does not cover all risks. There may be exclusions for unauthorized or intoxicated drivers, no first party uninsured motorist coverage, no coverage for certain passengers in the vehicle, and other exclusions.
Loss damage waiver (incl. theft protection) removes the drivers responsibility to a part of the vehicle in case of damage or theft.

LDW waiver is mandatory in Costa Rica, but can be declined if the customer uses his credit card car rental protection.
(Only possible with American Express, Master Card or Visa and never possible to decline our LDW by renting a FDAR, XDAR, XFAR and LFAX.)
With this act, the customer declares that fully understood the details of the car rental insurance program from his credit card and that he is aware that it covers the type of car rented in Costa Rica.
If LDW is not accepted the customer will be held liable for the full value of the car.
If the customer decides to use the car rental insurance provided by their credit card, a letter of proof from the credit card company is required, confirming that LDW/CDW is valid for all roads in Costa Rica and covers the type of car rented from SIXT.
Excluded from the coverage are damages on tyres and rims.
Excluded from the protection is driving through rivers, on beach or the contact with salt water.
If LDW is already included in the rates, the renter can choose Top Cover LDW to eliminate the Non-Waiverable Responsibility.
If Top Cover LDW is accepted, customer is only responsible for the following amounts: 0.00 USD
The Vandalism Protection provides cover against the consequences of damages due to vandalism on windshield, door lock, radio, CD player, antenna, and punctured tires.
Personal belongings are not covered with the vandalism protection.
In case of a damage a police report is required to validate the Vandalism Protection.
Cross Border Rentals are not allowed.
In case of offence against Cross Border & Territorial Restrictions all protections lose their validity.
Accessories are bookable without obligation and subject to availability.
One-way rentals within Sixt locations in Costa Rica are allowed under conditions depending on tarif.
International One-Way Rentals are not allowed.
In the case of unannounced and unauthorised one-way rentals, we reserve the right to charge an additional fee.
Navigation systems are available subject to a fee.
A charge is levied for the additional driver, whose details are noted in the lease only if the additional driver presents a valid driver's license.
Baby seats and child seats are available subject to a fee.
All vehicles are supplied with a full tank of fuel and should be refilled prior to return to Sixt, otherwise the current prices per litre of petrol or diesel will be charged in addition to a refuelling fee.
If desired, the vehicle will be refuled according to currently available conditions after returning it to the station.
Alternatively, you may purchase a full tank of fuel at the beginning of the rental at a price that is competitive with local fuel stations and can then return the tank empty. No refunds will be given for unused fuel.
Deliveries and collections are available at the local rental station subject to a fee.
This service is available on request for an additional commitment fee outside opening times at selected locations.
Surf rack, luggage rack and luggage top case are available subject to a fee.
Sixt Connect is available subject to a fee.
If you purchase the optional Road Assistance, we will provide you with breakdown assistance (where available).
Road Assistance includes:
Tow truck in case of an accident and/or mechanical problems,
Jumpstart,
Loss of key: Service to bring a copy of the key (key loss fee will apply, depending on zone, may apply an additional cost)
Leaving key in car: Service to open up the car (depending on zone, may apply an additional cost)

No Premium location fee for rentals at airport and train stations applies.
There will be a road tax, which is included in the rent.
A Loss of Key Fee of at least 200.00 USD applies, depending on the vehicle group. The delivery of the keys will be charged additionally.
Loss of the license plate Fee will apply of 300.00 USD.
Loss of the car documents Fee will apply of 50.00 USD.
The car key delivery fee depends on the distance calculated from the Sixt Headquarters in Costa Rica.
Plans can change. As a flexible mobility partner, we are happy to adapt to your plans. Thanks to our Flexi Return guarantee, you have the freedom to return the vehicle at any time to an authorised Sixt station, regardless of the rental agreement.
If your plans change during your hire period, let us know by telephone on +506 4000 7498 or in person at any of our stations, and our employees will amend your rental contract. By doing this, we can adapt to your changed plans. This service is, of course, free of charge for you.
If you return your vehicle earlier than agreed in the rental contract, we will charge the rental price according to the rental contract. You will receive a partial discount for the unused rental days.
When booking at a prepaid rate, a refund shall not be issued for returned early. For further information please refer to the section Prepaid Tariff - Pay now.
If you return the vehicle later, without notifying us, we will bill you USD 11.30 service fee for the Flexi Return Service. This fee applies in addition to any extra days which might incur due to the rental extension.
If you return the vehicle to a station other than that agreed in the rental contract, the Flexi Return location will incur a service fee of USD 18.08 if we have not been informed of the changes to the rental contract in advance.
