General rental information

Important documents

Upon handover of the vehicle, the renter and the driver must present a personal identification card or passport, a driving licence from an EU/EEA country (including Switzerland) - valid within national territory and required to drive the vehicle - and a payment method valid at least 30 days from the vehicle return and accepted by Sixt.

Driving licences from non-EU/non-EEA countries will be accepted if
a) no visa is entered in the passport of the renter/driver, or
b) the renter/driver has a visa in their passport and at the time of rental has not yet stayed in an EU/EEA country for longer than 6 months. If the driver has been in an EU/EEA country for longer than 6 months, a driving licence from an EU/EEA country must be presented.

A driving licence not issued in the Latin alphabet (Arabic, Japanese, Cyrillic etc.) must be presented along with a supplementary International Driving Permit. In the case of driving licences from countries which do not form part of the International Driving Permit agreement, a certified translation is required in addition to the original driving licence.

Age restrictions

Certain regulations apply related to minimum age and possession of driver's license which can be found during the booking process depending on the booked vehicle. Basically, the minimum age for every driver is 18 years (having held the driver's license for at least 1 day). A deviation from the minimum age is possible depending on the vehicle.

A young driver surcharge (Young Driver Surcharge) applies for drivers under 23 years.

Tariff information


Sixt accepts credit and debit cards by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club, Discover and JCB. Prepaid cards cannot be accepted as a method of payment. Sixt only accepts Maestro/V PAY cards for the hiring of vans and trucks, as well as vehicles up to Group F** (excluding Sports & Luxury Cars).

The hiring of vehicles from the PDMR group and higher, as well as Special Cars, takes place exclusively upon presentation of a credit card accepted by Sixt or means of authentication authorised accordingly by Sixt. Payment with a Maestro/V PAY card is not permitted for long-term hire. The method of payment must be issued in the name of a renter, presented upon collection of the vehicle, and be valid for at least another 30 days from this point in time. Sixt reserves the right to only accept credit card payments in combination with the PIN.
For business customers with which Sixt has entered into a framework contract, Sixt also accepts virtual payment methods, such as AirPlus and Amex BTA/iBTA. Requirements for the above are hereby (i) the existence of a valid framework contract, (ii) a cost absorption declaration for future rental under the terms of this framework contract, and (iii) a reservation with a customer number related to the framework contract.

Sixt CarExpress Servicecard (Advantage Circle) is only accepted in combination with a valid means of payment.

As security, the means of payment is debited with a deposit amount. The amount of the deposit depends on the vehicle group of the rented vehicle and according to the following table:

Prepaid tariff - Pay now

When booking a prepaid tariff, the payment method will be immediately debited with the expected rental price incl. booked extras and fees (gross). The driver and payment details will be set upon reservation and cannot be changed. There will be no reimbursement in the event of non-collection, delayed vehicle collection, or early return.

Subject to availability, changes to bookings are possible up to a maximum of 1 hour before the collection time specified in the current reservation, with a rebooking fee of EUR 29.23. A reimbursement of the rental price already paid, or a reimbursement of any difference, will not take place upon changes to the booking.

A change from a prepaid rate to a non-prepaid rate is not possible.

Cancellation is possible before the start of the rental. In the event of a cancellation, a cancellation fee will be due. For reservations of up to 3 days in rental length, the cancellation fee will be 100% of the specified expected rental price incl. booked extras and fees (gross) in the current booking confirmation. For reservations of more than 3 days of rental length, the cancellation fee will be calculated as follows: Expected rental price according to the current booking confirmation / days of rental x 3.
The cancellation fee will be voided if the customer proves that Sixt will not suffer any loss due to the cancellation, or that such loss is significantly lower than the cancellation fee.

In the event of failure to collect the booked vehicle at the agreed time, the rental price specified in the current booking confirmation must be paid in full. The reservation obligation of Sixt remains in this case until the agreed return time.

Protection conditions

Third party insurance

The protection for the vehicle rented includes a third party insurance with the sum insured for personal injury and damage amounting to a maximum of EUR 100 million, the maximum limit of indemnity for each injured person amounts to EUR 12 million and is limited to Europe.

Loss damage waiver (incl. theft protection)

Loss damage waiver (incl. theft protection) reduces the lessee's responsibility to a certain excess in the event of damage to or loss of the rental vehicle.

In addition, a reduction of the deductible is possible.

In the event of intentional or grossly negligent damage, the entitlement to the fully comprehensive cover taken out (including theft cover) may be shortened or voided.

If no fully comprehensive cover (incl. theft cover) has been arranged, the leaser is responsible for all damage to the car not proven to be caused by a third party, and shall be liable for up to the full value of the vehicle.

By taking out insurance protection for the interior, liability in the event of soil or damage to the vehicle interior can be reduced to a predetermined deductible or eliminated.

Personal accident proctection

By taking out personal accident protection coverage can also be extended to cover the consequences of an accident.

By taking out personal accident protection the limit of liability is: EUR 50,000.00 for invalidity, EUR 25,000.00 for decease, and EUR 1,000.00 for medical costs.

Tyre and Windscreen Protection

The Tyre and Windscreen Protection provides protection for damages on tyres, windscreen, side windows and the rear window with a deductible of EUR 0.00.

If no tyre or windscreen cover is agreed, the renter will be liable up to the full extent of the damage.

Roadside protection

The mobility service is an extended breakdown cover during the rental and protects against high service fees and repair costs in the following self-caused events, within national territory and on authorised travel abroad: loss of keys within the vehicle, breakdown due to a lack of fuel, emergency start in the event of an empty battery, loss of keys, and if the vehicle gets stuck.

All services must only be requested by using the Sixt 24-hour roadside assistance. This assistance also determines the type and extent of the cover, with the objective of keeping the renter mobile. Unless caused by Sixt itself within the framework of the mobility service, the renter is liable for damage to the rental vehicle.

Cross border rentals and territorial restrictions

Territorial restrictions

The vehicle selection can restrict travel to certain countries. For a description of these restrictions on admission, the countries are divided into three zones.

Zone 1: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain and Vatican

Zone 2: Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia

Zone 3: All countries which are not in zone 1 or 2.

Sports & luxury cars may enter only in Zone 1 countries. Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen cars up to group L*** are allowed to enter only in Zone 1 countries as well as Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Croatia, while X*** cars are only allowed to enter in Zone 1 countries. Vehicles of all other brands may enter only in the zones 1 and 2.

Trucks, vans, people carriers and minibuses of all brands may only be driven in zones 1 and 2.

Entry into any country in zone 3 is not permitted.

The local transport of the vehicle by ferry is permitted in compliance with the above-mentioned entry restrictions. Damage to the vehicle during the crossing will be covered according to the protection booked in the rental contract.

In case of offence against cross border and territorial restrictions all liability restrictions lose their validity. Only the protection of the liability insurance remains.

Charges when traveling abroad

For permitted journeys abroad in accordance with the above-mentioned entry restrictions, Sixt will charge the contractually agreed travel abroad fee as part of the booking process (selectable under "Extras"). This fee applies independent of the return location and, in the case of a one-way rental, in addition to the one-way fee.
For unauthorised use abroad, a contractual penalty of 150.00 euros will be payable.

One-way rentals

For one-way rentals, the contractually agreed one-way fee will apply.

In the case of unannounced and unauthorised one-way rentals, we reserve the right to charge an additional fee.

Navigation system

Navigation systems are guaranteed to be available if a booking is made.

Additional driver

A fee will be charged for additional drivers, whereby only persons entered in the rental contract with a valid driving licence may drive the vehicle.

Multiple driver flat rate

A flat rate is levied for any number of additional driver. All drivers must have a valid driver's license.

Baby and child seats

Baby seats, child seats and booster seats for children from 0 to 36 kg are guaranteed to be available if a booking is made (groups 0+, 0, 1, 2 and 3).

Vehicle refueling

If the vehicle has not been returned in a completely refuelled state, and if you have not booked the "Erste Tankfüllung" (First Tankful) or "Flexi Fueling" extras, Sixt will charge you the fees in accordance with the tariffs applicable upon rental, for the fuelling of the vehicle and for fuel. The respectively valid tariffs are available at the Sixt branches.

"Erste Tankfüllung" (First Tankful):
You can purchase the "Erste Tankfüllung" (First Tankful) extra at the comparable fuel station price and thereby return the vehicle without a full fuel tank. In this case, you will not be charged any additional refuelling costs in accordance with the above paragraph. Please note that unused fuel will not be reimbursed.

Flexi Fueling:
Subject to availability at the respective branch, you can book our "Flexi Fueling" service at the specified price and thereby return the vehicle without a full fuel tank. In this case, you will only be charged for the subsequently fuelled litres of fuel at comparable fuel station prices, in addition to the above-mentioned fee.

Delivery and collection

Deliveries and collections are available at the local rental station subject to a fee.

This service is available on request for an additional commitment fee outside opening times at selected locations.

Surcharge personal address
For delivery to or collection from an address that is not an official company location of the customer (e.g. private or hotel address), a surcharge of 10.00 EUR will be levied in addition to the collection/delivery fee. If applicable, the fee is not yet due at the time of reservation, but only at the start of the rental.

Winter equipment

A fee will be charged for winter tyres, unless already included in the base rental price. Snow chains and ski racks are also optionally bookable.


Upon request, we will provide a vehicle with a diesel engine for a fee. The fee will not be charged if no diesel engine is available. Available only for selected vehicle groups.

4-wheel drive guaranteed

For a fee, we will guarantee a four-wheel drive vehicle %u2013 only available for selected vehicle groups and only for long-term rental.

Trailer Coupling guaranteed

We can guarantee a vehicle with a trailer hitch, for a fee. Available only for selected vehicle groups and branches.

Comfort features

On request, the comfort features can be added for a fee. The following vehicle equipment is included: Parking aid, seat heating and Bluetooth function for your mobile device (e.g. hands-free system, music playback). Only available for selected vehicle groups.

Manufacturer Option

On request, we can provide you with a vehicle from the desired manufacturer for a fee. Only available for long-term rentals and selected vehicle groups.

New vehicle option

Subject to availability and only for selected vehicle groups, you can receive a new vehicle that was registered no more than 14 days prior, for a fee and in the case of long-term rental. In addition, you can drive the vehicle for at least 120 days without having to exchange the vehicle at a branch*. In the case of bookings within 48 hours before collection, Sixt reserves the right to fulfil the option within 48 hours after vehicle handover.

*excludes exceptions through no fault of Sixt, such as recalls by manufacturers.

Priority Service

The Priority Service can, upon request, be booked for a fee. The following services are included, depending on the branch: access to the Diamond Lounge or Diamond counter area, premium parking spaces or vehicle transfer directly to the terminal, vehicle instruction on request. Only available at selected branches and on selected vehicle groups.

Terminal Drop off Service

The Terminal Drop off Service can, upon request, be booked for a fee.

With this service the customer is allowed to return the vehicle at a desired terminal. A Sixt-agent will collect the vehicle and carry out the return process at the terminal.

Subject to availability at selected airport branches and only within branch opening hours.

Replacement car guarantee

Free replacement car in the event of accidental damage caused by yourself. For a monthly fee of EUR 15.00, with selected products you can be sure that even in the unlikely event of a self-inflicted accident you will remain mobile with a replacement vehicle. You don't have to wait for your rental vehicle to be repaired and are immediately mobile.

Other charges and taxes

Premium location fee

A premium location fee occurs for rentals at airport and train stations.

Out of opening hours

Out of opening hours service is available at selected stations. In this case, an additional charge applies for the provision of the service.

WLTP supplement

The WLTP measurement procedure is mandatory for new passenger car registrations and results in higher registration costs as well as a higher vehicle tax. The WLTP surcharge (registration fee) is charged with every rental.

Lump-sum expense fee for the handling of violations of the law (criminal offences, regulatory violations, etc.)

For the processing of traffic and regulatory violations, possession violations and other violations of the law, Sixt charges a lump-sum expense fee in the amount of EUR 29,00, unless the lessee proves that Sixt incurred no or significantly lower expense and/or damage.

Loss or Damage to the charging Cable for e-vehicles and hybrid vehicles

In the event of loss or damage of the charging cable for e-vehicles and hybrid vehicles, a fee in the amount of EUR 420,00 will be charged for the replacement procurement of the cable, unless the lessee proves that Sixt incurred no or significantly lower expense and/or damage.

Flexi Return Guarantee

Plans can change. As a flexible mobility partner, we are happy to adapt to your plans. Thanks to our Flexi Return guarantee, you have the freedom to return the vehicle at any time to an authorised Sixt station, regardless of the rental agreement.

If your plans change during your hire period, let us know by telephone on +49 (0)89- 66 060 060 or in person at any of our numerous stations, and our employees will amend your rental contract. By doing this, we can adapt to your changed plans.

Early return (Flexi Early Return) in the "Später zahlen" (Pay Later) tariff

If you return your vehicle earlier than agreed in the rental contract, we will charge the rental price according to the rental contract. You will receive a partial discount for the unused rental days.

Early return (Flexi Early Return) in the "Jetzt zahlen" (Pay Now) tariff

When booking at a prepaid rate, a refund shall not be issued for returned early. For further information please refer to the section Prepaid Tariff - Pay now.

Late return (Flexi Late Return) in both tariff options

If you return the vehicle later than agreed in the rental agreement, extra days may be charged due to the rental extension. The price of these will be based on the shorter hire duration. If you do not inform us about the rental extension, we will charge an additional service fee of EUR 11.90 for the Flexi Return service.

Different return location (Flexi Return Location) in both tariff options

If you return the vehicle to a station other than that agreed in the rental contract, the Flexi Return location will incur a service fee of EUR 19.99 if we have not been informed of the changes to the rental contract in advance.

Product information Sixt+


One month corresponds to a period of 30 days; a minimum period of 30 days applies. After expiration of the minimum term, the contract is always automatically extended by a further 30 days. You are entitled to terminate the contract at any time by returning his vehicle to a Sixt station. The return of the vehicle at a Sixt station is considered an ordinary termination of the existing contract with effect from the end of the 30-day billing period on the respective return date. Termination of the contract by Sixt is possible at the earliest 3 months after the start of the contract.

Age restrictions

Certain regulations apply to the minimum age and driving licence possession in the Sixt+ Auto subscription.
In principle, the minimum age for each driver is 18 years (driving licence possession for at least 1 day). A deviation of the minimum age is possible depending on the vehicle.

Sign-up fee

A one time only sign-up fee is charged per contract. The amount of the sign-up fee is shown during the reservation process.

Vehicle change

Sixt vehicles have a limited holding period and mileage. Therefore, Sixt has a right to exchange the vehicle delivered to you during the contract period when a certain holding period or mileage is reached. If a vehicle exchange is necessary, you will be contacted in time by the station and are obliged to return the vehicle to the specified Sixt station on the agreed date. You will receive an equivalent replacement vehicle for the exchange.

A service fee of 500.00 EUR will be charged if the vehicle is not returned in time for the specified exchange date.

An exchange of the vehicle for another vehicle model is possible on request, subject to availability. The fee is 49,00 EUR per customer-initiated exchange process and applies regardless of whether it is a vehicle model from the same or a higher / lower vehicle category.
If you change to a vehicle model from a different category than the one booked, the following applies to adjust the regular fees:
1. A change to a higher category results in the higher category being charged for the entire started 30-day billing period.
2. A change to a lower category only leads to a price adjustment in the following 30-day billing period.

Replacement car guarantee

Free replacement car in the event of accidental damage caused by yourself. For a monthly fee of EUR 15.00, with a SIXT+ subscription contract you can be sure that even in the unlikely event of a self-inflicted accident you will remain mobile with a replacement vehicle. You don't have to wait for your subscription vehicle to be repaired and are immediately mobile.

One-Time Replacement Car Fee

You´ve had a self-inflicted accident and have missed to book the Replacement car guarantee beforehand? In this case you can still remain mobile with your Sixt+ subscription. For a one-time fee of EUR 199.00 (per replacement car request), we immediately provide you with a replacement car. Hence, you can continue your subscription right away without having to wait until the damaged vehicle has been repaired.

Country roaming

You are entitled to drive the vehicle provided in Germany. Use of the rental vehicle abroad in certain countries (see the section "International travel and entry restrictions" in this general rental information) is possible against payment of an additional fee of 9.99 EUR in the form of a monthly surcharge on the contractually agreed rental price. For unauthorized use abroad a contractual penalty of 150.00 EUR will be charged.

Mileage not reported fee

At the end of a month you will be asked to enter the current mileage of the vehicle. This information can be entered directly via the app.

If you should not comply with the entry once, we will charge you a handling fee of 9.99 EUR. For each additional report of the current mileage not received in time, we will charge you 19.99 EUR.

Vehicle Return

Notwithstanding the possibility to terminate the contract at any time by returning the vehicle at any Sixt station, the customer will announce the return of the vehicle via the Sixt app at least 7 days before the end of the current billing period and a binding return date at a Sixt station will be agreed.

There is an additional service fee of 39.99 EUR if
- you do not arrange a return date and return the car unannounced to a Sixt station or
- you agree on a date for return, but do not take this date or
- you agree on a return date, but then return the vehicle at a different Sixt station than the one specified in the return date.

Please note that you will not receive a refund for unused rental days.

All rates are inclusive of VAT (if VAT incurs).
For corporate customers with individual agreements alternative prices and regulations can apply.
